5 ways to make moving house easier

Moving home can be a difficult and stressful experience. You’ve just gone through the process of buying the house, done all your admin, paid all your fees, and you just can’t wait to get the keys and move in.

Trouble is, you’ve got the actual moving part to do.

Packing boxes

But don’t worry, there are things you can do to take the pressure off the Big Day. Our sales team has some great tips and advice on how to make the move an easy and enjoyable process. We don’t want it to become something you dread, we want it to be something you look forward to! Read on to find out how to take the stress out of moving day.

1. Start early and plan your attack

Sounds like an easy one, but so often overlooked. Make a list of what you have in the house, room by room. Start collecting boxes and packing what you don’t need way in advance. Moving in summer? Pack your winter clothes away good and early. You won’t be using them, and you can pat yourself on the back for starting the job months before. Well done, we’re on our way.

2. Donate, sell and throw

You’ve just spent ages making an inventory of what you have, room by room, but do you really want it all? You’ve got a fresh start ahead of you, why not take the opportunity to have a clear out and get rid of some unwanted stuff. Throw away the broken furniture (go on, you’ve got our permission) and donate anything with some life left in it to a local charity. Sell some old clothes on eBay and make a bit of cash, bag up the rest for a charity shop (they’re always crying out for stock) and let someone else get some use out of your pre-loved things.

3. Move in the right order

Avoid the temptation to start chucking stuff in boxes in a hurry. It might feel like you’re accomplishing a lot but, hang on, where’s the phone charger? In the bottom of a box somewhere that you now have to unpack? Think about the order you’re packing in, you’ll need to eat and sleep, so pack your kitchen and your bedroom items last! Label absolutely everything and you can’t go wrong.

4. Manage the stress and make it enjoyable

Moving house can be disruptive to your kids and stressful to your pets. Consider asking a friend to look after your pets until the process is over. Include your children in the move by making it into a fun game for them. Set them tasks, like making colourful labels for their boxes or design their new room so they know what’s going where at the other end. It will help your children feel a part of the process and give them a focus when you need as much brain space as possible.

5. Get some help

Don’t go it alone, you really don’t have to. Enlist the help of some family and friend, folks are always happy to help. (Perhaps order in some food and make it a social occasion, not a chore.) It might also be worth budgeting to get the big guns in as well. Professional moving companies know how to move house better than anyone, and there’s often a range of services available for different budgets to help take the pressure off.

When it comes to the big day, following these handy hints can help towards making everything run smoothly for you and your family.
