Jake joined the Russell Homes Building Student Training Programme back in August 2019 after he finished Sixth Form achieving 3 A-Levels in Geography, History and Biology. He has recently completed the student programme and has now been appointed to Assistant Site Manager on Brook View.

The Building Student Training Programme is a fully funded 5 year course that sees students undertake a wide range of roles and complete their degree course at the University of Salford. Whilst earning a wage and attending University, students can build a career as a Quantity Surveyor, Site Manager, Estimator and more.

Working for Russell Homes for just under 5 years, Jake has been present on two of our housing developments across the North West. Jake has loved embarking on this programme with Russell Homes and mentions why he wanted to apply for the role in the first place:

“I decided to apply for Russell Homes Building Student Training Programme due to the amazing opportunities offered. I have been able to learn the academic side of the industry through university, whilst working and gaining first-hand experience.”

He added: “My advice to other 18-year-olds looking into the industry, is to enrol in a company that ensures you get a rotation of departments to understand the full scope of works required to building homes and a full development.”

Jake has worked under land and planning, quantity surveying, management and engineering during his time within the programme, quickly learning he enjoyed being out and about on site. His responsibility has grown on each site, with his favourite roles being programming the works on site and interacting with others in different professions.

After being appointed as Assistant Site Manager at our development in Wincham, once achieving his university degree, Jake said he was looking forward to fully stepping into his new role in the upcoming months.

“I am most excited about the handling of the NHBC, in its entirety, and prepping the homes for the inspection phase from pre-plaster through to the final CML prep.”

Since joining Russell Homes, Jake has been a great asset to the site and wider team, getting involved in all aspects of the build to helping in the local communities we build in. Most recently, taking part in several career fairs and advising secondary school students on how best to get into the industry.
