The Green Flag Award indicates that a park is well-maintained and provides a warm welcome to visitors. The nearby Queen’s Park in Heywood is one of these parks. Its serene gardens and beautiful lake make it a wonderful destination for a family day out.

Springfield Park, the largest park in the borough of Rochdale, boasts a variety of amenities such as a lake, a children’s play area, and a miniature steam railway operating on weekends during the summer. The park also offers opportunities for various sports, including football, cricket, tennis, and athletics, as well as a permanent orienteering course and the 18-hole Marland Golf Course.

This family-friendly club is at the heart of the local community, combining a great course with affordable memberships and green fees, making golf accessible to everyone. It’s tee time.

Wildlife lovers will enjoy the wildflower meadow and wildlife pond at Hopwood Park, yet another Green Flag awarded park! Other facilities include a modern play area, multi-use game areas, and a pump track. Live music and events The ‘Empire Rochdale’ is Rochdale’s oldest live music hall and a firm favourite amongst locals. Get ready to immerse yourself in the fantastic atmosphere week after week as live music sets the stage for unforgettable experiences. From Steely Dan to Bootleg Blondie, there’s a host of tribute acts and bands for everyone to enjoy.

The Middleton Arena and Heywood Civic Centre are also well worth visiting. From January to August, both venues host a variety of acts including psychics and magicians to ‘Noasis’ and dinosaur adventures. Don’t believe us? Check out their events guide here. Heritage railways

Instead of driving, you could opt for a unique experience and take your family on an enjoyable excursion aboard a historic steam train on the East Lancs Railway. For nearly two centuries, the East Lancashire Railway has been transporting both goods and people throughout the region. The railway has played a significant role in the history of the North West by connecting mill towns to bigger cities and global markets.

Powered by steam, the 12-mile track winds through stunning Lancastrian landscapes. With seven stops along the way from Heywood to Rawtenstall, visitors can explore artisan markets, charming cafes, quaint pubs, and local shops, each offering something unique.
