From sunlight to savings: How solar panels work and more

Brook View

A feature on many new build properties is solar panels, also referred to as solar Photovoltaic (PV) Panels, and they are becoming increasingly more accessible for everyday use.

With the Government reportedly set to call for all new build properties to be fitted with solar panels by 2027 as part of the anticipated changes linked to the Future Homes Standard, solar PV panels look set to feature more prominently in all future housing developments.

How do solar panels work?

Simply, they take energy from the sun’s rays and convert it into power; the energy that’s produced generates electricity that can be used to power your home. Solar panels work in a way that’s not too dissimilar to how plants turn sunlight into fuel that enables them to grow and thrive. Like plants, solar panels contain tiny cells that transform UV rays into energy. For a visual description of the process, check out this useful infographic created by the Solar Power Guide.

Benefits of solar panels

The benefits of installing solar panels are widespread and range from electricity savings, peace of mind when it comes to energy costs, and a reduced carbon footprint. Widely recognised as being a long-term investment, they can potentially even add value to properties. According to research carried out by Swansea University, solar panels can boost property values by up to 7.15%.

Do solar panels work in all weather conditions?

Contrary to popular belief, solar panels do still work on dull days, even operating in the deepest, darkest depths of winter. The panels work by drawing in light, so on a bright summer’s day, they extract lots of light, and on greyer days, they’re still working away, but just not absorbing as much light. Will solar panels save me money?

The savings that can be generated by solar panels vary from property to property, but according to Solar Advice UK, solar panels can reduce the average monthly electricity bill by half and even by up to 70%, depending on location and system. The solar panels installed on a wide selection of homes on our latest development, Brook View, run between 0.8 – 2kWp, depending on how many solar panels are installed (this differs depending on the plot and house type).

Why is there such a big push for solar panels right now?

Solar panels are widely recognised as being one of the tools that can help the UK become net zero and reduce its impact on the environment. The Government’s Plan for Change is focused on delivering more ‘homegrown energy’, which has been acknowledged as being one of the quickest and easiest forms of energy that can be used by households to reduce their carbon footprint and generate valuable energy bill savings. For further details about the future vision, take a look at the Government’s Solar Roadmap.

While solar panels may seem like a bit of a minefield, they’re fast becoming a common feature on properties of all sizes and designs, helping the UK get ahead in the race to net zero and delivering valuable benefits for everybody who owns them.
