Building Insights: Our approach to delivering green-led designs
Our Design Manager, Neil Walker, features on the Building Insights podcast talking all things green spaces.
With all new housing developments having to demonstrate a minimum 10% Biodiversity Net Gain, we are having to look at new sites through an even greener lens.
At Russell Homes, we’ve taken a proactive approach to delivering green-led design, which has resulted in us receiving an award from the UK Green Building Council.
Our Silver Status NextGeneration award is a major eco assessment framework, backed by Homes England, Lloyds Bank and the UK Green Building Council, designed to recognise new homes which exceed mandatory sustainability standards. At Brook View, assessors highlighted the use of sustainable building methods, increased biodiversity to be delivered upon project completion, responsible employment practices and the provision of affordable homes.

Where possible, we’re always looking at how we can embed green design features into all of our new developments, which have resulted in streams, wildflower meadows and green entrance gateways taking centre stage. Meanwhile our future design plans include more of the same, as well as proposals of orchards and swales.
The design of our developments are overseen by our Design Manager, Neil Walker, who has been working in housebuilding design since the late 1980’s. He recently spoke to the Editor of Housebuilder and Developer about our green-led design vision, which ultimately involves prioritising green spaces over bricks and mortar.
