Making your living room cosy for Autumn
As the clocks go back and the nights get darker, you’ll no doubt be looking to stay warm and cosy in your living room this autumn.
We’ve done our research on interior design this year, to bring you the five best ways to turn your living room into the perfect autumnal den for you and your family.
Your new Russell Home already boasts lots of features to help you stay warm and cosy, to make the most of the season. Our expert design team have included insulated doors and windows to keep you toasty, whilst another key focus was on lighting throughout the year and the best use of space.
Here’s our top tips for giving your living room a touch of autumn and bags of personality.
Colours: What the experts are saying
A great advantage of your new build home is that the bigger tasks such as decorating and flooring are already completed to a high standard. However, now’s your time to inject some seasonal colour into your living space with minimum fuss or effort.
For this season’s colours, we’ll defer to the experts at Pantone and their colours this year bring: ‘A wide-ranging mix of colours contrasts our co-existing desires for rest and relaxation with non-conforming exuberant expression.’
With that in mind, the top colours pick are deep blues, reds & greens, alongside caramel colours, the perfect seasonal touch.
Textures: Blankets, cushions and more blankets
Nothing creates a cosy atmosphere quite like blankets and throws in a range of fabrics and textures. Without any upheaval, you can easily create a layered look by draping them over your furnishing – keeping them close to hand to snuggle underneath when the temperature drops. Faux fur, chunky knitted wool and velvet are all perfect for adding to the autumnal atmosphere whilst keeping it all feeling wonderfully luxurious.
Smaller furnishings like coffee tables and bookcases are going to be more permanent pieces in your living room, so it’s important that they add to the autumnal aesthetic but can’t be out of place in the summertime either. Natural materials, such as wood, is your best friend.
Lights: Turn. Off. The. Big. Light
De-stress with softer lighting using floor and table lamps to cast a glow across the room, especially with LED lighting. Use warmer tones, as opposed to cooler tones, and consider dimmable lighting to help you effortlessly set the tone and ambience of the room. Candles are an obvious choice for softer, more characterful lighting and really complement the earthy, rustic feel you’re looking to create in autumn.
Accessories: Minimum effort, maximum impact
When it comes to accessorising your living room for the season, the options are endless. Simple touches like throws, pillows and cushions add warmth through textures in the room. Our top tip, you needn’t buy new cushions, art or wall features, simply change the cushion covers and swap art over to suit the season.
Put your craftiness to the test, by bringing the outdoors inside and making your own fireplace features from pumpkins and pinecones. You’ll truly be taking inspiration from the natural world by bringing the oranges and browns of autumn inside.
For an even bigger statement add rugs to hard flooring to, not only trap the heat and keep you warm, but also add a pop of personality.
Atmosphere: The finishing touches
It’s the finer details and accents that complete the room and truly make it your own. Use scented candles to add your signature seasonal scent, as well as adding that soft, warmer lighting. Reed diffusers are another great way to achieve this, with fragrances of cinnamon, apple and pumpkin all complementing your aesthetic.
Any décor this season should be led by the fact your living room is your place of relaxation, where you can spend quality time with the people you care about. While you’re cosying up in your living room this autumn, have your favourite book in hand, ornaments on your mantlepiece and surround yourself with the things that make you feel happy.
